SCSI Card Probe Order ?

Post by Alban Pearc » Tue, 18 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi is there a simple way to change the order of probing/booting  for scsi
cards in the 2.0 kernel I have a DPT 2120 eata card and an adaptec 1740 card
and the kernel always boots from the adaptec not the DPT and I want to change
this Thanks for any Info ...

I don't think it has anything to do with the kernel, as it would have to be
able to read the kernel before it could boot, wouldn't it?  Earlier along
the bootup is LILO, but to run LILO you would still need to be reading from
the correct disk.  I think the boot sequence is based on the I/O port order,
or possibly the order the cards are in the slot.

Cheers, Andreas.

Where the system boots from is determined by the BIOS, not by Linux.
You may have the option of moving the BIOS roms on the cards around.  Try
to assign the rom on the DPT card a lower address than the Adaptec card,
so it will be found first during boot.

1. SCSI Card Probe Order

THANKS !! for the replies I tried moving
the scsi card order in hosts.c and that did not help
the system boots of the dpt card in dos and the dpt card is found
before the adaptec card
in linux lilo is on the drive on the dpt card (sda)
this boots the kernel (2.0.0) then the kernel probes the adaptec card
after that the dpt card is probed ana then the kernel tries to mount
/dev/sda6 and it now looks at the disk on the adaptec card calling it sda
but the real sda is on the dpt card ,, AAGGHH !!!
