Very Computer

After upgrading, any new kernels I compile under Slackware 3.0
seem to work fine, but when I go to use pkgtool or run setup
again, the screen clears (is 'reset') and then it dies quietly.

Using the kernel which shipped with Slackware 3.0 they appear to
work ok.

X works fine, as do other non X apps.  

I have tried loadable modules on/off, 1.3.20, 1.2.13, elf,
a.out, nothing seems to make a difference,

I suspect its something related to the screen colors in these
programs.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about Slackware 3.0, but under Slackware 2.1, I could never get
pkgtool to work in an xterm.  And if I did it from an console, the screen
would blank UNTIL I MOVED THE MOUSE!  I suspect some interaction with gpm.
