Probably, more than you have inodes on your harddrive... I wouldn't worry
about it.

It's defined by the value that is returned by sysconf(_SC_OPEN_MAX),
which is currently 256 under Linux.

If you look in the sources, /usr/src/linux-1.2.xx/include/linux/fs.h,
you will see the max open files is set to 1024 for the system and 256 for
any one process. I had to bump up my max open files.
1. is there a limit by user to the number of file handlers open?
i'm having a weird problem where code of mine that ran yesterday isn't
running today, and for the life of me it seems it can't open another
pipe. i wasn't aware of any meaningful /etc/system- type settings
here, apart from an rlim_fd_max=9216 i have. this particular user is
my worker, and has probably 20 substantive processes running at once.
