Linux and signalprocessing

Hi everybody,

I have the following problem :
We intend to use a PC with Linux for signal processing. That is
a signal is sampled with approximately 20 kHz, send to a DSP card
(card for the PC) and directs the data to the PC (with DMA).
The problem is that Linux seems to start some system activity
every minute and the data flow is interrupted for about 30ms.
I guess this is some kind of demon which updates certain things.
Is it possible to stop it for a longer time while the recording
 is running ?

 Thanks
 Thorsten
