Forgot to specify route netmask?

Forgot to specify route netmask?

Post by Lam Da » Tue, 24 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I got complaints about route netmask when booting 2.1.16.  Here's the
tail end of the boot messages:

  Partition check:
   sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
  PPP BSD Compression module registered
3c503.c: Presently autoprobing (not recommended) for a single card.
  loading device 'eth0'...

  eth0: 3c503 at i/o base 0x300, node  02 60 8c a4 66 64, using internal xcvr.
  eth0: 3c503 - 8kB RAM, 8kB shared mem window at 0xcc000-0xcdfff.
  lo UP fl=0000004b pa=0100007F/000000FF brd=FFFFFF7F dst=00000000
* route forgot to specify route netmask.
  eth0 UP fl=00001043 pa=0B0AA8C0/00FFFFFF brd=FF0AA8C0 dst=00000000
  Adding Swap: 65532k swap-space (priority -1)
  registered device ppp0
  ppp0 UP fl=00000051 pa=556BD9CE/FFFFFFFF brd=00000000 dst=4807ECA5
* pppd forgot to specify route netmask.

Both eth0 and pppd0 work as usual.  I'm using:

  libc-5.4.17
  modules-2.1.13
  gcc-2.7.2.1
  binutils-2.7.0.3.

Please advise.

I had the same problems when I tried upgrading to 2.1.16 from 2.0.27.  It looks
like the new route command is a little picker than the old one.

I got a couple of messages from my rc.inet1 file about the netmask also.  But my
problems with pppd are worse... pppd registers itself twice in my routing table.
I had to go back to 2.0.27 temporarily.

It looks like pppd isn't passing the netmask to the route command.  I don't know
if that's a configuration problem or a bug in the pppd code.  I'm sure there's
lots of other people with the same problem.
