Every time I try to compile texinfo with static linking,
glibc-2.0.7pre6 and gcc-2.7.2.3 (both as distributed in binary form
via the Debian-2.1 distribution) I get the following errors:

I've gone through every file mentioned and changed it and can find
nothing wrong. Please help.

The error messages say that gettext related symbols are compiled
in libc.a. Try --without-included-gettext or similar configure
options.

I think it's correct. E.g.,

   Has(turris) altitudo puppium ex barbaris navibus superabat.(Caesar)
   (The hight of the sterns of the barabarian ships were higher
    than the towers.)

`Has' is accusative of `hae'.
