Linux 1.3.12: Bootup error "idle processes may not sleep"

Post by Nicholas Crawfo » Thu, 27 Jul 1995 04:00:00

I've recompiled the kernel twice and I still get this error.  Not sure
what it means, but I've also been having some problems that may be related
to the boot error.  Whenever I load a program that "sleeps", such as gpm
or selection, then I kill it, (kill -9 pid) it locks the console, won't
let me switch consoles or type anything and I have to hit the power
button, therefore doing damage to my filesystems :)

Anyone else have this error, and have a patch/fix for it?  Thanks

        Linus mentioned it in the release notes for 1.3.12;
something ``funny'' creeped up from under the ps2
mouse support with the scheduler changes on 1.3.12.

The phenomena doesn't sound nice - especially as I
have a ps2 mouse on my laptop..

I've tracked it down to linux/kernel/sched.c.  Atleast, thats where the
idle task may not sleep expression is.  (Processes = task)  What does
this mean?  Its never happened before, and noone else is getting this
error... I'm using GCC 2.7.0.

1. Help : redhat 4.2 instal l: error : "Idle task may not sleep"

I installed redhat the other day on a computer that has the following:

asus p2l97 pii motherboard
2 64mb sdram dimms
fujitso 3.5 gb hard drive
trident 9865 video card w/pc2tv
powercom 32-bit pci

and it all isntalled fine, but when I tried to login my password
wouldn't work. which wass weird. so I re-installed just the base
system.. still didn't work.. next time it didnt work.. then teh next
time during install it was copying hte kbd-package and it gave me a
bunch of errors (I didnt think to write them down until the very last
time) and was saying "Idle tasks may not sleep" over and over then did
nothing..

so I reinstalled again then again n and once more. these times it did
it all during "making ext2fs system".. and the last time I tried to
reinstall here's what I got :
