smc-ultra network card

Post by Jochen Henneber » Tue, 06 Feb 2001 06:23:32

Hi,

I'm trying to run a smc-ultra network card, the modprobe command on
the jumper configured card (io=0x300, irq=10) works without error messages
and the modules:
smc-ultra
8390 [used by smc-ultra]
are installed. After that I mount the card using ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3
and try a ping on another computer, but nothing happens!!!
How could that be, another network card in the same computer works
fine (using the ne module)!!!!

Thanks for help,

Bye,

Jochen Henneberg

Are you sure the card works? I've been using smc-ultras fro years with
no problems.

ls mod shows:
smc-ultra               4960   1
8390                    6240   0 [smc-ultra]

syslog:
Feb  4 14:01:16 darkstar kernel: smc-ultra.c: Presently autoprobing
(not recommended) for a single card.
Feb  4 14:01:16 darkstar kernel: smc-ultra.c:v2.02 2/3/98 Donald

Feb  4 14:01:16 darkstar kernel: eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x220, 00 00 C0 13
0A B4, IRQ 10 memory 0xcc000-0xcffff.

Do you have anything in /etc/modules.conf for the cards?
How about the memory range, any other cards conflicting?

If you see something like this

    eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x280, 00 00 C0 BE EC DB, IRQ 10 memory 0xc8000-0xcbfff.

when you type 'dmesg | less' everything is ok and you most probably
forgot to set the route, especially the default route.  See the
NET-{3,4}-HOWTO for details how you do this.

Regards.

Holger

How about ifconfig eth0 up?

BTW: Is it eth0?

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.3 automatically implies up.
Try typing ifconfig eth0 to print the current state
before and after setting the IP address.
If the other computer is not on the same subnet you
have to configure netmask, gateway and routes,
ifconfig will not do that for you.

Try ping some local addresses first e.g.:
ping 192.168.0.3
ping 192.168.0.2
ping 192.168.0.1
ping 192.168.0.4

The default netmask for your IP is 255.255.255.0
ifconfig will set that netmask, if your netmask
for some reason is different you have to specify it.
