Upgrading to 2.0.35 and module utils - am I missing something?

Howdy:

I just compiled 2.0.35 on RH4.2 (stock 2.0.30) and now depmod writes
a 0-byte modules.dep file (needless to say, modules won't load, not
even with insmod).  What packages do I need to upgrade?  Can someone
point me in the right direction?  Thanks in advance,  Steve

I've recently (re)built a 2.0.35 kernel on my OmniBook 5500. I used the source
tar from the kernal archives, starting with .33 and patched to .34 and then
to .35. I also have the modules-2.0.0 distribution, ftp'd from the same archive
dir as the kernal tar file. In addition, I also have to contend with the PCMCIA
card services, currently using 3.0.0. But unless your system is a laptop, you
probably don't have to worry about the pcmcia-cs package.

The tools such as depmon, insmod and kerneld are from the modules-2.0.0 pkg,
not the kernel tar itself. If you've upgraded the latter, you need to rebuild
the former, as well.

1. Upgrading ports; am I missing something?

I administer several 4.4-STABLE boxen filling various roles.  I've started
using the portupgrade suite of tools for ports management, but had a couple
of questions:

1) Are a lot of people using portupgrade?  I've not had any problems with
it, but it'd be nice to know that I'm not the only user on the planet.
   Any success stories?  Failures?

2) Some ports have a lot of compile-time options, ie mod_php4.  When I
upgrade it, I want to use the same options.  Is there any way to handle
this gracefully, short of making notes for future reference?
