I've recently (re)built a 2.0.35 kernel on my OmniBook 5500. I used the source
tar from the kernal archives, starting with .33 and patched to .34 and then
to .35. I also have the modules-2.0.0 distribution, ftp'd from the same archive
dir as the kernal tar file. In addition, I also have to contend with the PCMCIA
card services, currently using 3.0.0. But unless your system is a laptop, you
probably don't have to worry about the pcmcia-cs package.
The tools such as depmon, insmod and kerneld are from the modules-2.0.0 pkg,
not the kernel tar itself. If you've upgraded the latter, you need to rebuild
the former, as well.
