Kernel 1.3.34: Cannot get a free page.

Post by Uli Upho » Tue, 17 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

Running kernel 1.3.34 I noticed the following:
Starting XF86 and some memory consuming programs suddelnly
the processing of these programs stopped and connecting
the X-server was not possible any more. I was able to shut
down the X-server, but the only interesting message in
/usr/adm/messages was kernel: couldn' get a free page.

Has anybody found similar behaviour ?
Any hints about possible causes ?
What does the message really mean ?

Greetings

Uli

Kernel 1.3.34: Cannot get a free page.

Yes, I tried 1.3.32 last night and everything went fine. No lockups
no unusual messages in /var/adm.

Knowing not so much about the paging
mechanism I tried a very conservative bios memory timing, but
the described lockup behaviour reappeared in 1.3.34.

1. ppp on kernel 1.3.34

Just to warm your heart - you are not alone in this world who is getting this
message.
My misery went further, though - I've got this message the first time I have
rebooted with the new kernel.
The next time, the machine just hangs stating it has started sendmail...
