Help: Drivers for a VME Bus

Post by Hernani Pedros » Tue, 11 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I have program running in a normal PC over windows 3.11 with a
DPMI interface to comunicate with a bus VME. Now I want to install the
Linux in the PC and port the program. The problem has three faces:

i - Exist an identical DPMI in the Linux OS?

ii - Exist some device drivers to comunicate with the VME bus? Where
can I get one?

iii - Or I have to create a new driver?

Please can anyone give me a hand ?

Thanks,

Hernani Pedroso

You should give more information on the system you have.
Is your PC only connected to a VME-bus computer or is it integrated
i.e. part of it?

1. There is no DPMI at all in Linux (dosemu is not the issue now;)
   and lo, it is good.
2. There is no special driver on any OS that is dedicated to handle the
VME-bus. Simply because there is no need at all. There is no special
way to treat devices/memory via that bus. The hardware handles all
   specifics.
3. In case you need more than port i.e. memory access to your other
VME-bus cards (assuming your PC(card) is part of the VME-computer)
you might want to web to http://www.llp.fu-berlin.de. There fetch
a driver example and alter it to match your needs.

1. Summary: VME bus Device Driver question

Hello all,

I had previously posted a request for ideas in reguards to developing a
VMEbus interface for a single board computer under linux.

Linux is now communicating on the VMEbus.  I used vremap() (linux 1.3.24) and
it does a wonderful job of mapping the high end physical space to virtual

Other suggestions included:
        * using mmap with /dev/mem
        * patching setup.c/mm.c to allow physical address ranges larger
          than physical RAM
        * writing my own version of the current /dev/kmem driver

Thanks to all who responded.
