VFS:Mounting root-filesystm (ext2) read-only (HANG)

Hi,
until yesterday everything was OK with my system. I was in the kitchen when I
heard the computer rebooting by itself and then after detecting my hardware
specifications with CD-Rom, Harddisk partitions .... it hangs directly after
the following message :
        VFS: Mounting root-filesystem (ext2) read-only
When I boot with the emergency diskettes and the ramdisks, I can mount all
my partitions with no problems. When I ran fsck.ext2 on the root partition,
the fsck.ext2 had to remove some Inodes !!!
What's wrong with the system.
It's a standalone system (So no network) running Linux 1.2.13 (ELF). 2 Days
ago I made an upgrade  from RedHat 2.1 to RedHat 3.0.3.

Please mail me as soon as you can.

thanks

Sounds like indigestion. It may have caught a sudden power surge or
brownout and rebooted, especially likely depending on what you were
using in the kitchen. In any case, when it came back up, the filesystem
had been corrupted by the abrupt shutdown.

1. VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly ... HANG!

I keep gettin' the above error message when trying to boot off a
single drive (SCSI) system. LILO runs fine, loads the kernel and the
system is booting until initially trying to mount the root filesystem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

System has single 80MB SCSI drive (sda) w/ root on sda1, swap on sda2.
4MB RAM, 386DX/33 w/ 387. I know it's a dog, and a very old dog at
that! I only need it to run a couple of daemons and that's it.

Thanx!

Joe
