oops with 2.5.47-mm2

Post by Paolo Ciarrocch » Thu, 14 Nov 2002 23:30:09

Hi Andrew,
I can reproduce an oops simply running fillmem 400

kernel is 2.5.47-mm2
fs is ext3.

ksymoops 2.3.7 on i686 2.5.47-mm2.  Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.5.47-mm2/ (default)
     -m /usr/src/linux/System.map (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information.  I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc.  ksymoops -h explains the options.

Error (regular_file): read_ksyms stat /proc/ksyms failed
No modules in ksyms, skipping objects
No ksyms, skipping lsmod
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0ebbb04f

Sorry, don't know.  It doesn't happen here.  It looks like the
filesystem registration code was affected by the recent modules improvement.

If you can reproduce it, could you please test 2.5.47 plus
just the -bk changes?  They are in
http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/2.5/2.5.47/2.5.47-mm2/broke...

1. Modules fun with 2.5.47-mm2 (or -bk)

Hi,

The recient modules changes are 'fun'.

First the Docs have not been updated.  A quick search of lkml found Rusty's
new utilities...  After that booting worked a little better...

Here is what complains here:

Module ip_tables cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.c:1385
Module tulip cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in drivers/net/tulip/tulip_core.c:487
Module pl2303 cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c:1408
Module snd cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in fs/proc/inode.c:204
Module agpgart cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in drivers/char/agp/agp.c:67
Module pppox cannot be unloaded due to unsafe usage in drivers/net/pppox.c:52

And these will not load at all.

via_rhine: Unknown symbol mii_ethtool_gset
matroxfb_base: Unknown symbol matroxfb_global_mxinfo
scsi_mod: Unknown symbol module_dummy_usage
usb_storage: Unknown symbol scsi_register

I also had to modprobe a few modules manually, for instance, psmouse...

The via_rhine load failure is a killer here - its connected to my DSL modem...

Hope this helps,
Ed Tomlinson
