New: Laptop keyboard doesn't work

Post by Martin J. Blig » Thu, 15 May 2003 17:30:13

           Summary: Laptop keyboard doesn't work
    Kernel Version: 2.5.69 and 2.5.69-bk8
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal

Distribution: Debian (Sarge)
Hardware Environment:

Laptop, AMD mobile Athlon XP 2000+
VIA Technologies, Inc. P/KN266 Host Bridge
No external keyboard connected (the thing doesn't even have a PS/2 connector).
Please let me know if there is any more useful information I can supply.

Software Environment:
Problem Description:

I can boot the kernel, but I can't input anything on the keyboard. I'm pretty
sure that this is not due to a bad configuration. I read the post-halloween-2.5
doc and some related bug reports. Here are the relevant parts from my .config:

CONFIG_INPUT=y
CONFIG_SERIO=y
CONFIG_SERIO_I8042=y
CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBOARD=y
CONFIG_KEYBOARD_ATKBD=y

I enabled DEBUG in i8042.c. I'll add the output (with 2.5.69-bk8) from kern.log
as an attachment.

Steps to reproduce:

Boot the system ;-)

1. Keyboard doesn't work under 2.0.27 but works with 1.2.13

I have an old IBM PS/2 Model L40SX and when I boot with 2.0.27 and
then it asks for the root disk, the enter key doesn't seem to work.
But it I use 1.2.13 then it works fine.  I have LILO loading from the
hard drive and now it boots up fine but when I try and enter root for
the login, again the keyboard doesn't work.  I am using slackware and
it has 10MB of ram and 60MB hard drive.  The only thing that I see that
looks like it might be a problem is that is says APM BIOS not found
when it boots under 2.0.27.  I am using the bare kernel in both cases.
Is there something that I could change in the 2.0.27 kernel to get it
to work?
Thanks for any help!  Jerry
