2.2.20 crashing every other day

2.2.20 crashing every other day

Post by Micah Anderso » Wed, 02 Jan 2002 05:00:12

Recenrtly I've installed a new mailserver for our organization,
primarily serves mailing lists, based on debian potato, kernel 2.2.20,
postfix, software raid 1.

It works great, under heavy and light load, except that every day or
every other day, it hangs. It wasn't doing this when I installed and
burned in the box, and only in the last week or two has it started to
do this. I've been unable to track down what could be causing the
problem. I run a vmstat 5 5 and a ps auxwww every minute to a file,
where I dont see anything strange except for zeroed out data beyond
the end of the file, a block looking like this:

^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@

I've had to install the software watchdog in order to keep us up, but
we experience data corruption, loosing a mailing list almost every
time the crash happens. Fortunately we have backups, but once a day
restoring the backups is becoming a very problematic task, especially
for an all volunteer organization.

This is an AMD 800mhz system with 256MB RAM, every partition, except
swap on software RAID1.

I dont have an oops to run ksymoops on, but here is a bunch of
information I hope provides anyone with clues. I can provide any
additional information on request... your help in solving this is VERY
much appreciated!

On boot, I do: hdparm -q -c3 -m16 -d1 -u1 -A1 -k1 /dev/hda
               hdparm -q -c3 -m16 -d1 -u1 -A1 -k1 /dev/hda

The 2.2.20 kernel was patched with the raid-2.2.20-A0 patch, the
.config file is included below.

1. poptop on Linux 2.2.20

Hi,

I'm hopelessly stuck with trying to get poptop working on my linux box.
I have compiled poptop and updated the pppd but am stuck with the
ppp upgrade.  The pppd requires the make kernel to update the ppp files
so it can understand mppe encryption.  But so far ppp.c have not been
able to compile.  I've tried compiling it a hundred times but it keeps
returning an error and won't compile.  This is on a 2.2.20 kernel and
2.3.11 pppd.

Any ideas?

thanks
