A tester is needed with dual P3 and USB

Post by Pete Zaitce » Wed, 29 Aug 2001 07:30:10

Hi, All:

I received a complaint that a UP kernel hangs on boot if USB is
enabled. SMP works. An SMP kernel started with "nosmp" hangs too.
The reporter is, umm, how shall I put it... is a power user.

I need someone to help me to track the problem down, because
I am curious. I heard of SMP hangs before, but a UP hang is
a novel idea.

The box is VA Linux 1000 (similar to IBM Netfinity 4000r).
Kernel is 2.4.8-ac10.

If you love me (or USB subsystem in kernel) enough to help
me out, and you your hardware reproduces the problem,
please reply privately.

Thanks in advance,
-- Pete

Doesn't VA use one of those Intel boards which have the problem
with theis BIOS, which is seen as a hang with the adaptec driver?

Tried the same work-around? (enabling the APIC)

1. Dual P3 vs P4 - need recommendation fast

I'm going to buy a new computer and have to decide within a few hours
what prosessor configuration to choose.

First I decided to choose a dual P3 1GHz with 512 MB DIMM SDRAM PC133.
After a conversation with a friend and the local computer store, I
decided to go for the P4 1,7 GHz with 2x256MB RIMM 400MHz RAMBUS.

I was recommended this mainly because of the faster RAM bus that comes
with the P4 solution.

After reading some articles (for instance <URL:
http://www.inqst.com/articles/p3vp4/p4vp3article.htm>) I'm starting to
change my mind.

What should I do? The computer is going to be my workstation running
Linux. I don't think I'm going to use all the CPU time for a while
(other than running dnetc), but I hate to get the second best option
when I'm going to buy a new box. I'm not a real game buff, but I'm
going to buy a GeForce2 card so that gaming now becomes an option.
