My 2.4.19 box today showed these 2 messages:

Hostname: kernel: memory: cbc1eee0
Hostname: kernel: memory: cbc1ef60

What is the signifance of such messages?

Hmm... you *sure* it wasn't "memory :" (note space before colon)?

If so, might be agpgart_fe's ambiguious printk (and disgustingly normal).
I'll post a patch RSN.

HTH,
Neale.

1. "Memory is tight" message -- same kernel, different messages

Regarding the discussion about the "memory is tight" message, here is
some new input.  Several days ago I installed the slackware distrib.,
and used the system (486/33, 8MB) for several days.  I NEVER got the
"memory is tight" message.  Yesterday I reinstalled the entire system,
choosing (to the best of my memory) all of the same options EXCEPT:

        - I decided to use 2048 byte inode size (was 4096)
        - I chose to install the SCSIkern in addition to IDEkern

Otherwise, the setups are identical.  Suddenly, I now receive the
"memory is tight" message every time I boot up.  I DID NOT REBUILD THE
KERNEL, and I am using the SAME DISKS.  So I can confirm that the
actual system memory is NOT a factor, and that the kernel build is
also NOT a factor.  Today I used pkgtool to uninstall SCSIkern; no
change, I still get the "memory is tight" message.

Any ideas?

And a question:  Does the "memory is tight" message have any
operational implications?  In other words, is Linux behaving any
differently after bootup when "memory is tight" versus when it is not
"tight"?  Any Linux/LILO/Slackware gurus reading this list??
