I am running 2.4.21-pre5-ac3 but I have seen these errors in previous
kernels too.  I get the following in /var/log/messages

Apr 14 14:55:30 localhost kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
Apr 14 14:55:30 localhost kernel:   Error: Illegal request -- (Sense
key=0x05)
Apr 14 14:55:30 localhost kernel:   Invalid field in command packet --
(asc=0x24, ascq=0x0
Apr 14 14:55:30 localhost kernel:   The failed "Mode Select 10" packet
command was:
Apr 14 14:55:30 localhost kernel:   "55 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 00 "

and ..

Apr 14 17:42:20 localhost kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
Apr 14 17:42:20 localhost kernel:   Error: Illegal request -- (Sense
key=0x05)
Apr 14 17:42:20 localhost kernel:   Invalid command operation code --
(asc=0x20, ascq=0x00
)
Apr 14 17:42:20 localhost kernel:   The failed "<NULL>" packet command was:
Apr 14 17:42:20 localhost kernel:   "d8 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 37 00 00 "

and also a lot of messages like

Apr 14 17:56:26 localhost kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51
{ DriveReady Seek
Complete Error }
Apr 14 17:56:26 localhost kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54

These errors appear when I rip and burn cds using xcdroast.  Ripping and
burning appears to work OK except that the computer has a load average
up to 4 when ripping and X is very sluggish (including the mouse pointer
moving jerkily)!  DMA is enabled for the /dev/hdc (the cd drive)

Any help is very much appreciated.
