2.2.19 hangs just before "Uncompressing Linux"

Hi kernel gurus & testers:

When booting from my recently compiled Linux kernel version 2.2.19, about
90-95% of times the system hangs just after printing:
Loading nameofimage.........

And doesn't get to the point where the kernel uncompresses (that is, no
Uncompressing message). However, booting the same kernel from floppy is OK
and works 100% of times (the same applies for other kernel versions).

With 2.2.18 I've been experiencing the same behavior, but with this
version instead of*, the machine reboots itself, and "only" about
50% of times. Also I discovered that pressing some keybpard keys while the
kernel is being loaded makes it more probable to get a succesful boot.

With kernel version 2.2.17-idepci as shipped on Debian Potato, I've never
experienced any kind of problems.

Searching through the mailing list archives I've seen comments about a
possible defective RAM causing this problem. However, the system never
hung up once it is up un runnig, and this machine is nearly always using
all of my RAM and working at high workloads.

1. "unresolved symbol strlen_user" for Linux 2.2.19?

Hi.  I've always used/needed iBCS under Linux and it has usually come
along with my Slackware distributions, although once or twice I had to
compile it from the source.
Hi.  I've just installed Slackware 8.0 which has linux kernel 2.2.19.
Slackware 8.0 doesn't seem to have iBCS, so I retrieved the source and
compiled with no problems.

However on doing a 'modprobe iBCS' I get the following error messages:

# modprobe iBCS
/lib/modules/2.2.19/misc/iBCS: unresolved symbol strlen_user
/lib/modules/2.2.19/misc/iBCS: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.19/misc/iBCS failed
/lib/modules/2.2.19/misc/iBCS: insmod iBCS failed

I've only seen one article referring to this on www.dejanews.com, suggesting
that it's a difference between kernel versions supported by iBCS.

I'm not even sure that I've got the right sources, or that linux.dev.ibcs2
is even working these days (www.dejanews.com says that they are
'no longer archiving' the newsgroup).  Could someone help bootstrap me
back into the iBCS world please? ...

o  is linux.dev.ibcs2 alive?  If not, what is the appropriate newsgroup?

o  I retrieved ibcs-2.1-981105.tar.gz from tsx-11.mit.edu.  Is there a
newer version or better retrieval location?

o  The README in the version I retrieved gave a vger.rutgers.edu address
for a majordomo-handled mailing list, but my e-mail subscription bounced.
Can anyone point me towards any on-line support groups/lists?

   Oh, and hopefully ...

o  Can anyone help me fix the problem?

Many thanks,

Brad Rosser
