eepro dies in kernel 2.4 (RedHat 7.1)

I have an old Intel EtherExpress Pro (ISA). It works great on small
intervals using the eepro module. What I mean by small intervals, is
during for example, a download of the kernel (or anything of this size), i
get several stalls in the download. The only way to contiune with the
download is to ifdown eth0; ifup eth0. This works everytime, but because i
can simply up and down it, i don't think its a hardware issue (I may be
wrong).

Could somebody tell me if they know the reason for this and/or how to fix
it? Is it a common problem with this NIC?
