DECAlpha box halted on startup Urgent help required please!

Post by Brendan Boyl » Sun, 28 May 2000 04:00:00

We are running a Digital AlphaStation 500 333Mhz which is failing to boot
with the error message below.  The OS version is V6.3-11.  Our Unix
administrator is currently uncontactable and we desperately need to get this
system up and running again as soon as possible and would appreciate anyt
help the newsgroup can supply.

The error message on startup is:
Can't open VMunix
trying /etc/sysconfigtab.15
loading /etc/sysconfigtab.15 ...
current PAL Revision <0x1000000010112>
Switch to OSF PALCode succeeded
New PAL Revision <0x1000000020115>
Linking 104 objects : 103 Can't open /sys/BINARY/ALCOR.MOD
Halted CPU 0
halt code =5
Halt instruction executed
PC=20010530
boot failure

Please excuse any typo's above, I am taking this information second hane
from someone with poor writing :)

Thanks in advance
Brendan Boyle

        There is no such things as DEC UNIX version 6.3-11.  You need to
boot off of your OS CD-ROMs and examine your system disk.

        Do the following at the boot prompt;

        >>> boot <cdrom device>

        Example:

        >>> boot dka500

Ummm you have the wrong os version listed there, the error message is
a Tru64 message and the very latest version of Tru64 is 5.0a.
From the above message I would say that you have a problem which will
require a competent admin.
You could try booting from the generic kernel, but it looks to me like
you have more problems than that.

What were you doing before this happened? Why did you shut down the
machine? What does your operations manual say about unusual boot
procedures for this machine?

If you want to try booting from the generic kernel then the command you
need would be
boot -file genvmunix
If this works then when your admin gets back make sure that you tell
him about the problem and get him to rebuild the kernel and sort things
out.
Hope this helps

From the OS version number that you state, it sounds like that the
system is supposed to be running VMS. However, the error messages
indicate that it is trying to boot UNIX. The operating system boot
infomation is stored in NVRAM or battery backed up CMOS (I am not sure
what technology is actually used to implement this). This information
has apparently been changed. I know we had a similar problem when UNIX
was installed on an Alpha that previously had NT installed on it, but I
do not remember how to change it as I was not directly involved.
Assuming I remember tomorrow morning in the office (unfortunately this
is a rather risky assumption these days), I will make some enquiries of
the appropriate people.

There was no VMS version of "V6.3-11".  The last V6 version of VMS was V6.2.

The "V6.3-11" version string sounds more like a console firmware version, and
it's many versions out of date.
