Dumping XFS File Systems across a network

Does anyone out there share my misfortune in having recently upgraded an
SGI Indy to Irix 6.2 only to discover (well apparently it did say deep
down in the release notes) that I can no longer use rdump to back up my
system?

I used to backup to an Exabyte mounted on an UltraSparc running Solaris
2x, but it appears difficult to do this using the new SGI utility,
xfsdump. This apparently is not really intentional on the part of SGI,
but is nonetheless an 'unsupported issue'.

For the time being I can cheat by using xfsdump, piping the output to
rsh and using dd on the remote host thus:

xfsdump -l0 / | rsh remotehost dd of=/devicename

This seems to work, but takes absolutely ages. Has anyone out there
found the same problem and thought of something better?

I had this very problem a few months ago. I spent a few weeks trying
to find a clever way of doing it[1], but eventually I had to give up.
Now I back up that particular machine the same way you do[2].

If you find a better way of doing it: Please let me know!

Sincerely,

Lars Josephsen

[1] I called both Sun and SGI but neither was able to help, although
SGI tried to sell me an external DAT drive for twice the market value
:-)
[2] Only once a week, the users are advised not to leave important data
on it.
