Daily dump to file?

Daily dump to file?

Post by David Nix » Fri, 02 Mar 2001 20:10:54

dump, ufsdump, vxfsump all have a dump to file option which
I am considering incorporating into a dump schema which would
do daily dumps to file and use two DLT drives for weekly/monthly
dumps.

Pros:
      * No need to change tapes
      * Less chance of a dump failing ?
      * Simpler/quicker handling of ad-hoc restoration requests
      * Frees up limited number of DLT drives for weekly and monthly dumps

Cons:
      * Could need lots of disc space
      * Backup data is less safe on disc in a machine room than when stored
on DLT in a storage room.

Replicating the daily dump files on another disc located outside the machine
would improve data safety, somewhat... What are peoples any opinions about
file dump as a backup method ?

1. unix dump: dumped twice to same dumpfile; restore if file displays only last dump

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root     554221568 Nov 22 16:07 /mnt/cc/cc

restore > ls
.:
System.map              grub/                   map
System.map-2.4.8-26mdk  kernel.h                message
boot.0300               kernel.h-2.4.8          os2_d.b
boot.b                  lilo                    us.klt
chain.b                 lilo-graphic/           vmlinuz
config                  lilo-menu/              vmlinuz-2.4.8-26mdk
config-2.4.8-26mdk      lilo-text/

That's a mighty big filesize for /boot which i know to be 23 MB.
So i must assume that the first dump (of / ) is still there.
But restore only lets me see the latest dump (on top of that "layer")

Anyone ever encounter this and recover the first dump?
