Need to synchronize password files on multiple machines

  I have four Unix servers with mildly divergent password files and
approximately eight NFS clients of those servers. I want to create one
password file from the four existing files and change the ownership on
all the files on all twelve machines to reflect the changed UIDs.

  I am sure this has been done before. Has anyone automated this in a
portable fashion? Does anyone have any hints, warnings, etc? Any input would
be most welcome.
