Printing to Novell printer from UNIX

Printing to Novell printer from UNIX

We have several Novell printers under 3.11 running in our department and
I wonder if anyone has some software that will allow one to print from an
RS6000 UNIX straight to one of these instead of having a dedicated UNIX
printer?  The printers are connected via HPJetdirect interface cards and
from the reading I've been doing the major problem is the IPX vs TCP/IP
used by the two systems.  Is there translation software available to run
on UNIX that can emulate that used by Novell?

Novell makes a product called FLEX/IP. I have used it at several
clients sites with very good success.

There are two Novell options, NetWare NFS and Flex/IP.
They include the PLPD gateway NLM which enables any UNIX host
which supports LPD printing protocols to address any of the NetWare
connected printers as a remote printer.  A few filters are available
with it, the most useful being the postscript filter which will pass
postscript text unmodified but will convert ascii text to postscript.

We have used NetWare NFS for 3 years with a pretty wide range of
UNIX boxes  (HP, ICL, IBM, Sun, BSD and SCO).  The only ones which
had any problems were the earlier SCO boxes which didn't support LPD.

In our net, we have hundreds of pcs running netware and
telnetting to unix hosts, as well as hundreds of dumb
terminals connected to unix hosts.  We took the 'easy'
way out and are running Netware on our data general
Aviion machine, and cross-configured all printers.
Now I'm insisting we ONLY purchase hp4 series with
MX cards.  I just set up both protocols on the printer,
run the hp utilities to associate the printer to netware
print queues, and set the printer up as a unix printer
on the dg/ux side.  The newest version of dg/ux allows
you to set the printer up as a 'termserver' through
port 9100.  There is also a unix 'netware' filter that
works great in such a case.  I know this doesn't exactly
apply to you, but someone else might have a similar
environment to ours.  Now any printer anywhere is
truly a 'network' printer.

I've found a "lpdsim.nlm" for novell. It should emulate a Unix-printserver,
but I didn't have the chance to try it yet.
Ask archie for it.

If your printer is something like an HP4siMX witha  jet direct card then it
supports multiple protocols (Actually I think the Hp4 series all supports it
if you have a new enough jetdirect card installed)  You just need to setup
your machine to accept packets in IPX and TCP/IP and our unix machines should
be able to print to them.

No, I don't have a solution to this, but I would be interested in hearing
potential solutions, as a department down the hall just purchased one of
the HP ethernet printers and would like to do this as well.

TFM with the printer didn't really help much, although the printer does
have hostname and TCP/IP setup.  Trying the standard remote printing to it
simply does not work.  I suggested they contact either HP or SCO tech
support, but I heard they are not getting very far this way.

Thanks    Good day     JSW

New Jet Direct cards can serve both NetWare and Unix (TCP/IP) machines.
If you have only IPX speaking cards, you can try install some
kind of gateway on NW server:
one is NW NFS for $$$, but works OK, if you need no NFS on
NW server than you can use Flex/IP which is NFS for Netware without
NFS :-) - only ftp, printing, xconsole.
there is also lpdnlm module for about $100, check Novell
discussion list FAQ for details
a very cheap solution is to use Charon - mail gateway, which
has ability to serve as lpd gateway also - it's free, but requires
additional PC
