Thanks to all who have answered to my SOS!
The problem is still here haunting my poor machine.
Many suggested a conflict in SCSI addresess; I think this isn't the
issue because probe-scsi reports this stuff:
Target 0
Unit 0 Disk Maxtor P0-12S JB-22
Target 1
Unit 0 Disk Quantum P105SS ....... GENERIC
Target 3
Unit 0 Disk Quantum P105SS ....... GENERIC
Target 4
Unit 0 Removable Tape Archive Viper 150
Target 6
Unit 0 Removable Read Only Device Sony CD-ROM
I also managed to install SunOS on the Maxtor disk (I physically removed
sd0 and sd1). After putting them back I could boot from the Maxtor
and mount the two Quantums, use the tape and CD-ROM at the same time.
But this wasn't what I had in mind to do, also rarely and randomly
I'd get the same error but no panic and everything continued to work.
sd0a: Error for command 'read'
sd0a: Error Level: FATAL
sd0a: Block 7440, Absolute Block: 7440 <-- this value changes
sd0a: Sense Key: Hardware Error
sd0a:Vendor 'QUANTUM' error code 0x90
I still can't believe it's a conflict in the SCSI addresses because the
following message is generated while booting /vmunix so the hw addressing
should be correct.
swap on sd0b fstype spec size 20580K
dump on sd0b fstype spec size 20588K <-- Why a different value?
sd0a: Error for command 'read'
sd0a: Error Level: FATAL
sd0a: Block 7440, Absolute Block: 7440
sd0a: Sense Key: Hardware Error
sd0a:Vendor 'QUANTUM' error code 0x90

Another strange thing I just notice is that the light of the
tape is always on even when no tape is inserted. In my old Sun 3
the light goes on only when there is a tape.
Adrian S. Le Hanne suggests to put the CD-ROM as the last device
of the SCSI chain; before going out and buying a new SCSI cable
I'd like to know why?
Quoting from Roddy McColl 'I understand that the CD-ROM should NOT be
at the end of the chain'.
My opinion is/was that a device should be position independent.
Raj Manandhar suggested the cables are too long.

A B C
cable A is 28" from Sun
cable B is 56" from Andataco
cable C is 0" Terminator from Andataco on AD732C
I haven't tried other configurations because of lack of cables.
Jon Alperin says that CD-ROMS for RS/6000 are single ended devices,
what about Sun's? I got no specific answer from Sun in Italy!
Thanks again.
