Sounds like what your looking for is the console-server program written

in /pub/console-server directory for anonymous ftp.

I haven't actually used it, but I seem to remember it does pretty much
everything your asking for and you get the source code so you should be
able to modify it to your liking.

               cheers,

I just downloaded this.  Currently it uses serial ports on the console
server machine.  Does anyone know of something like this that can use TCP
connections?

We already have a Xyplex terminal server that has serial ports that can be
connected to the console port of various Suns.  You can telnet to a TCP
port on the Xyplex and it passes the connection through to a corresponding
serial port.  It would be nice if the console-server could make use of this
facility, instead of using serial ports directly.

I suppose it could be kludged by using ptys.  The master side of each pty
would be a daemon that connects to the Xyplex, and the slave side would be
listed in /etc/constab.

i have written such a program (called gate) that allows any tcp
port to be accessed via a pty.  it was created to allow a netblazer
to be used as a modem and printer server.  if there is enough
interest, i can post it (it needs to interface to syslog or at least
have better diagnostics).

This shouldn't be all that difficult (make the config file parser

doing connect(), etc rather than open().

I am using this program, but since we have it running on a DECstation
I took the easy way out and got LATs so I didn't have to do any work...  :-)

1. please, oh please, someone help me, i'm really stuck

long ago i had linux on a 486, now i have replaced that machine but i
got another 486 sx/33 that i want to put linux on.  there are no special
devices, one 3.5 floppy, one 270 meg ide hd, one 14.4 modem, thats it.
i'm using bare.i as the boot disk and color.gz as the root disk
(although i never get to the root disk part).
when i boot the machine with the boot disk in the floppy drive, it gives
the LILO message, then gives a prompt.  it says DO NOT CHANGE DISKS
YET.  this prompt is only for extra parameters.  well the last time i
did this (long ago) i just pressed enter and had no prob.  Now, no
matter what i enter here or even if i press nothing, it gives me a whole
screen full of gibberish and some errors
the following is an excerpt from this screen, can someone help me figure
out why this won't just boot through like slackware did for me the first
time?  btw, the first screen says it is 3.4.0.
