SW/HW advice needed to setup an internet connection

Post by Chen-Kuo C » Wed, 23 Feb 1994 06:38:30

I am helping my company to setup an internet connection . Our goal is
to allow all the employees to dial-in and have internet access (ftp, telnet,
news, e-mail, upload/download files...).

Could some experts out there give me some advice and suggestions in
choosing the SW and HW.  We will buy a 486/586/GB-HD PC and put UNIX on it,
routers, modems and any peripherals needed.  We also want some software like
Eudora, Trumpet, Mosaic and Waffle.  Could someone tell me where to get these
SW?

Please reply by e-mail.  Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Call Sprint.  I got an amazing quote for frame relay (56 KB)
connection.  It was 1/3 the cost of leased line, at least for our
situation.  I hope that there are no unforseen zingers because this is
probably what we are going to go with.  They specify the hardware which
you can buy or lease.  This would only be the connection to the
Internet, net services (e-mail, news, etc.) you would have to provide.

1. Help with new security hw & sw setup

Hello all,

I am looking for advice.  I have a home office that I run my business from.
I have a constant cable modem internet access that hosts my web page.  I
often find myself at a client site and I need files from my server.  I also
tend to do a lot of my admin work remotely.

Now, I currently have two Linux boxes.  One is a 200mhz Pentium that is
acting as a router.  The other is my web/file/print server for internal and
external usage.

I am considering getting another machine to act as my
router/firewall/gateway and seperating my internal and external usage.  I'm
not sure if there are any advantages for me though.  Mainly because I need
files off of my internal server frequently.

Does it make sense to use a distro like the Linux Router Project (single
floppy)?  Is there a better single floppy distro?  This would only be on my
router machine of course.

Here is what I know so far (non-router machines).
I plan to use Red Hat 7.
I'm going to upgrade the kernel to 2.4.2
Use monMotha's IPTables Firewall (is this a good choice?)
        Install tripwire
I would like to use the Linux Intrusion Detection System but it
doesn't support 2.4.2.  Any suggestions for an alternative?

Is there a way that I can setup the web server machine so that nothing can
be changed on the file system unless you reboot to a different run level?
Is it practical to put the whole thing on a CDROM and if so, how?

I'm really fuzzy on the best topology.  I want great secrity but admining
10 machines would be a pain.  Is 3 the right number?  Should my internal
machines go through the file server to get to the internet or straight to
the router?

As always, any and all help is appreciated.
