restrict users to a menu program

restrict users to a menu program

Post by Samwise Gamg » Fri, 25 Apr 2003 14:05:12

I have a Tru64 system that I want to restrict access to for a number
of users.  We have an OpenVMS system that only lets these users access
a dozen or so programs and then exit.  No interactive shell is used.
Is there a utility or method of configuration that I can employ to
limit access with a menu-driven interface?  I was thinking that I
could use rbash and limit the path to a small selection of programs,
but I would rather give them a similar interface to the one they are
already familiar with.  I am not really concerned with any of them
cracking the system, most are barely computer-literate.  I am more
focused on easing the transition from the VMS programs to the new ones
on Tru64.

Thanks!

When you have the program working as a standalone application that
can be started from the command line you can simply set it as the
users login shell.
For example if your program is called 'menu' and lives in
'/usr/app/' then you could add the following line to /etc/passwd
and the user 'user1' would then have the 'menu' program as their login
shell.

user1:*:201:20:Restricted Application user:/usr/users/user1:/usr/app/menu

Hope this helps

PS comp.unix.tru64 may offer you help with the porting to Tru64.

1. put User Menu in a mouse pop-up menu in Gnome/Enlightenment?

Hello,

I am a relatively new Linux user (RedHat 6.2) and am trying to
customize Gnome/Enlightenment.  I have put applications want in the
User Menu (~/.gnome/apps), but I would like that menu to pop up within
the menu that comes up with a middle or right mouse button click.  I
cannot figure out how to do it.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.
