How to print ASCII files on a postscript printer

Hello,

We have several Brother HL-8PS printer here. They can be configured to work either in Postscript mode or in HP LaserJet III mode of operation, by means
of front-panel selectable options.

This means that we have to change the mode of operation at the printer's front panel in order to go from Postscript mode to HP LaserJet mode, and vice versa. Is there any way, such as by means of using a printer filter or some such (I don't know anything about printer filters), to be able to print both ASCII text files and Postscript files?
