No Telnet/FTP From Remote Network - Local Works Fine

Post by Sam » Sat, 01 Sep 2001 23:51:37

I am having a problem where I can't telnet to my AIX 4.3 box from a remote
network.  I can telnet just fine from the local network.  Pings from
anywhere work OK.  Just Telnet & FTP are broken.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Please remove <nospam> from email address to reply to me.

What do you mean when you say you "can't telnet"? Do you get a connection or
not? If you get a connection, but it is dropped without a login prompt, you
probably have TCP wrappers installed. Look for /etc/hosts.allow, and be sure
you know what you are doing before you change anything. If you don't even get a
connection, you probably have a packet filter in the way. Talk to your network
admin.

that's probably a good thing, unless you are using a secure telnet.

I would suggest that disallowing TELNET from an outside network is a good
thing.  You would do well to use a secure protocol such as SSH rather
than using TELNET.

1. Network Problems - Remote Ping successful / telnet local successful / telnet remote failed

im working with a small Linux System with network support on an local
network. A ping from a remote machine is successful. A local telnet
session is also successful. A telnet session from the remote machine
will fail.

I can see with ifconfig, if the ping from the remote machine is running,
the tx counter increases. If I try the remote telnet session, i can
watch incoming packets but no packet will transmitted.

With tcpdump i see the telnet connect request from the remote machine.
At next my machines sends an arp-request about the address of the remote
machine and the remote machine replies the correct information, but
nothing will happen.

My routing table has an entry for the network an for my own machine.

Has anybody an idea whats going wrong.

Thanks

Peter
