Wanted: FAQ sheet, ftp sites, book lists, software

Post by Warren Toom » Thu, 04 Apr 1991 13:10:39

As a new reader of comp.unix.admin, I'd like to ask if anybody has
the following:

        - a list of Frequently Asked Questions in comp.unix.admin

        - a list of ftp sites where some/all of comp.unix.admin
          is archived

        - a list of book titles that people recommend, with ISBN

        - a list of public-domain (or otherwise) software that
is useful in administrating Unix machines, with details of
          how to obtain the software.

My interest lies in administrating, maintaining & keeping secure BSD4.x
boxes with Usenet/Uucp/Internet etc. connections, although information
on SysV, Xenix and other varieties would be helpful too.

If these questions can be quickly & easily answered, please post here.
Otherwise I'll collect email resonses, summarise and post the result here.

Thanks very much,

        Warren Toomey.

|>   - a list of Frequently Asked Questions in comp.unix.admin

There is no comp.unix.admin FAQ posting.  The closest thing to it is the FAQ
posting in comp.unix.questions.

|>   - a list of ftp sites where some/all of comp.unix.admin
|>     is archived

As far as I know, this newsgroup is not archived anywhere.  The archie
server on quiche.cs.mcgill.ca (telnet to it and log in as "archie" with no
password) knows of no sites archiving comp.unix.admin.

|>   - a list of book titles that people recommend, with ISBN

You will probably find this periodic posting useful:

Subject: YABL (Yet Another Book List)
        Newsgroups: comp.unix.questions,alt.books.technical

If it has expired at your site, you can get a copy of it using the
instructions at the end of this message.

Browse through comp.sources.unix and comp.sources.misc.  That's where most
of the good stuff is archived, although you might also want to dig through
alt.sources.

There's a lot of software out there.  It's hard to just jump on top of all
of it and try to grab everything.  Wait until you need some particular utility
and then look for it, and you will almost certainly find it.

1. UnixWare FTP sites for my FTP sites FAQ?

The next edition of my SCO FTP sites FAQ will be coming out in a few
weeks.  I'd like to expand it to include any popular UnixWare FTP sites
that exist.  I already know about the Freebird / ex-USLE archive &
mirrors.  If any other useful archives exist, please let me know.  The
previous version of the FAQ is at

  ftp://ftp.celestial.com/README.sco-sites

For each site I need the host name and directory(ies) under which to
look.  If possible, also include the name and email address of the
archive maintainer.

I'd especially like responses from archive maintainers themselves...

Thanks,
