HP-UX 10.01 backpup using 'dump' questions

Post by Al La » Mon, 27 Jul 1998 04:00:00

We have a HP 9000 series 800 running HP-UX 10.01. I need some advice on
backing up using dump.

I tried to backup a 1.5G filesystem using 'dump' onto a 4mm 120m DDS tape
using a HP SureStore 1200e tape drive.  Dump asked me to insert a new tape
after backing up only about 40M.  The command I used is:

   dump 0df 6250 /dev/rmt/0mn /dev/filesystem1

If I understand correctly, a 4mm 120m tape can hold 4G w/o compression.
What have I done wrong  here?

TIA for any advice or comments?

p.s. we have a total of 5 filesystems (/dev/filesystem1...5).  Is it possible
to backup all 5 filesystems with a single  'dump' command?

i always thought it would work like this:
dump 0df 6250 /dev/rmt/0mn <dir where /dev/filesystem1 is mounted>
... but i could be wrong.

I'd think so, too.  At least that's what manual page says.  But
perhaps dump is smart and uses that directory anyway (apparently it
can find out it from mountlist).

As to the other question about multiple directories, perhaps "fbackup"
could be used instead.  It reads a config file and there one can
specify several directories (you can use "sam" to config it, no need
to touch manually any system files).

According to man page, it uses dump and ftio, but I don't know how
easy or difficult it would be to read those tapes on other systems (if
that is preferred).

Fbackup, HP-UX 10.20 and a HP 4/8GB DDS-2 tape drive is able to backup
several GB's of data (about 7 GB uncompressed), so perhaps it's at
least worth trying (one reason for "fails" might be wrong device... if
it somehow thinks that the /dev/rmt/0mn's capacity is just 40MB and
therefore asks for a new tape).

1. SYSVR4 boxes can't mount from HP-UX 10.01 !

We've recently upgraded one of our servers from HP-UX 9.05 to 10.01, and
now there are two clients that refuse to mount NFS volumes from the
HP-UX 10.01 server. These are the specs of the offending clients:

   Unisys 6000/U running SYSVR4 (v.1.3, take 18.7)
   Pyramid       running SYSVR4 (SMP_DC.OSx v 1.1)

Note that both are straight SYSVR4 boxes. Both of them hang after the
"mount" command is issued, with a message like:

% mount -F nfs hpserver:/home/accounts /newhome/accounts
nfs mount: hpserver:/home/accounts: remote mount server not available:
RPC: Name to address translation failed - n2a: hostname not found.

However, I can ping "hpserver" with no problem. Also, both of these
clients mounted NFS volumes just fine, when "hpserver" ran HP-UX 9.05.
The rest of clients (SunOS, Solaris, OSF/1, SCO, etc) can mount from
HP-UX 10.01 just fine.

This is tryly puzzling...Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!
