Unix/W95 Question, dumb question...

Unix/W95 Question, dumb question...

Post by Don Shelto » Wed, 03 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I don't speak Unix, and now I have a problem.  I am trying to add a .CGI
script to a subdirectory
on A Unix based machine.

This is what I found with my WSFTP program.....

-rwxr-xr-x  1 winds  wind5   38464 Jun  1 22:45 chat.cgi
-rw-r--r--   1  winds  wind5  39797 Jun  2 21:20 chat2.cgi

^^^^^^^^^  This is why it does not run! The access rights (correct term?)
are not correct.

From my limited Unix knowledge, I know that with a Shell Account, I can
CHMOD 777
and it opens wide up, and I can see from above what mode actually works.

My dumb question is How do I change the Unix Rights on CHAT2.CGI to the same
on CHAT.CGI from a non shell account please?  (Win 95 only)  WS_FTP won't.
Is there a utility or program?

Thanks for the help!

The newer version of WSFTP supports chmod.  Right click on the chat2.cgi
file and choose chmod (unix).  Then check the execute boxes to give it
execute permisions.

1. dumb dumb question

I've got a stupid question.
I'm a VERY VERY new user of Linux, and I don't know a damn (thank you
Supreme Court) thing about doing anything.  My friend said I had to run
XF86Setup as root, but I have no idea how to do that.  I know how to
logon as root, and I've got the files installed from the Slackware
distribution (I think it's 3.0).  I'm just stuck at the getting started
point.   What do I type as root to run the XF86Setup program?
A somewhat bewildered newbie,
James
