Synchronizing time across the network

I would like to have a variety of minis (all Unix & 1 VMS), workstations and
novell servers have the same time. Is there an agent can serve across
these platforms. And are their external time servers that can be used
to set a local server. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
we're using xntp3 to do this. Synchronizes times on machines on our
local network very exact. There are timeservers to connect to with
xntp. So you have the exact (tm) time.
It compiles and runs under hp-ux and AIX, we could not get it to work
with A/UX, but maybe new versions will work. There are config files
for a lot of machines like sun, VAX (ultrix), hp, i386, mips, rs6000,
sgi, sony, NeXT....

On the suns (I am not sure if it is a sun-specific or general unix) you can
use the command 'rdate' for setting the system date from a remote host.
You may be able to get the source and port it to the VMS (if it does not have
a version of its own).

There is a program called xntp that will get time from an
external server and set the clockof the machine its running on.  We
have a network of suns here and thats how we sync our machines.  I'm
not sure how portable it is but I know it runs under more than a few
Operating systems.  If you give it a try, make sure you get version
3.

The C source code for rdate for VMS 5.5 and UCX 2.0 is available
through anonymous ftp from ftp.ccsn.edu in /pub/rdate.  I, too, would
recommend that you run xntp3 on your Unix machines and then use rdate
once a day to synchronize the VAX.

1. Synchronizing unix machines across network

We are in the process of bringing our source code under configuration
management using CaseWare/CM. We have found that a time difference in the
clocks on the configuration management machine and the host machine is
preventing the [Build] function registering changes and recompiling the changed
files.  Is there a way to synchronize the clocks periodically on all the
connected machines? (The machines in question are Sun and RS6000s)

It has been suggested that we look into timed or ntpd but I don't know what
they are let alone applicability to our problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
