Connecting network printers to X-terminals and PCs ??

Post by Ramakrishna Polamra » Tue, 10 Aug 1993 06:06:39

We have recently got a RS6000 Model 370 and some X-terminals. My question
is:
- Can we connect network printers to the serial/parallel ports of X-terminals
and how? (what are the advantages/disadvantages of connecting to serial/parallel
ports).

- How do we use the printers connected to the PCs (running NCSA Telnet) for
printing RS6000 the printers connected to the PCs running NCSA telneti for
printing RS6000 jobs? (we can download files to the PC using NCSA FTP).

RTs is a 10pin male connector for which I could not find the right cable
in any catalog.

- Is putting a Printer directly on the ethernet as a node (by attaching an
ethernet card) a better solution?

We have connected the RS6000, 3 PC RTs, X-terminals, and PCs  with
ethernet.

Thanks a lot.

I don't know, how IBM does that. The solution of HP  for  the
RX/700 X-Terminals is as follows. The Terminal has a TCP-port
for the parallel interface (and another one for the  serial).
On  the system, where your printer queue resides, you start a
little daemon, that connect's to the master side  of  a  pty,
and  send's all the data to the tcp port of the terminal. The
spooling system just uses the slave side of the  pty  as  the
device  to  print  on,  so  it  look's like a local connected
    printer to the spooler.

Look into the doc's of your X-terminal,  if  there  are  such
port's  defined.  If you cannot find an appropriate daemon on
AIX, I may help you to write your own one.

Until later, Jan
