Which server to buy?

Which server to buy?

Post by JavaCa » Sat, 03 Feb 2001 01:37:11

I would like some recommendations for the purchase of a server which
will host a site with a database of 100,000 records. Most likely I
will use Unix/Linux with MySQL.

I have checked out Cobalt, IBM, and Dell but I can't seem to get a
firm answer as to which is best.

My budget is around $5,000 give or take $1,000.

Thank you.

100,000 records of 10 bytes each? Or 20K each, spread across 50 tables with
complex joins? 100 transactions per hour? 500? 20,000?

For that, you can pick up a headache-free medium-duty machine from many
vendors (we've had good luck with HP and VAlinux).

100,000 records is tiny. Why not check out the new
Sun/Solaris box for under $1K?

We've had good success with VA's 2230 systems.
