Apache and byteserving PDF files

Apache and byteserving PDF files

Post by Simon Twigge » Sat, 18 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Hi there,

I have recently started using Adobe Acrobat PDF files on our server -
(apache 1.2.4) and according to the adobe docs it is possible to
configure the server so that the browser can request one page from the
PDF file at a time. Older versions of apache required a byteserver cgi
script, but 1.2.4 should already be capable of this without requiring
any other scripts.

I have looked through the Adobe and Apache docs and I cant find any
mention of how to enable this option, if it does need to be enabled. At
the moment the PDF files come over as expected, but the whole file is
sent in one lump (using Netscape 3 for Win95, or Netscape 4 for the Mac,
or MSIE 4 for Win95).

Do I have to configure the server to send the PDF pages one at a time,
if so, where should I be looking? Alternatively, does it do it
automatically and its just my browsers arent sending the right requests?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

It does it automatically.  You need to use the correct version of
the client software (ie. a plugin as opposed to a standalone version)
and Adobe's code was broken horrible, as was Navigator's code.
Using v3.01 of Acrobat should work if you use it as a plugin.  If
not, it is due to broken client issues.

1. byteserving a PDF file with Apache 1.3.14

We upgraded your Apache server from 1.3.6 to 1.3.14. Since then
byteserving for PDF files seems no longer to work, at least if the user
has IE5 on Win and the Acrobat plugin, I don't know how it is with othr
browsers and platforms.

The first page gets loaded, but as soon as the user tries to access
another page it takes ages to load this page (Minutes for a page just
containing text over an switched ethernet connection to a server which
is not under load at all).

It works well if the clients use Acrobat as external application.
