apache 1.3.19 on linux 7 startup error

Post by Lindy Foste » Fri, 04 May 2001 08:18:53

When I try to start httpd (using apachectl start), I get the
following error:

Invalid argument: shmctl() could not set segment #24715

This is with the linux 2.2.19 kernel.

Any suggestions?

I guess you use RedHat 7.0 (or is it SuSE? Mandrake?)
Did you upgrade the kernel by RPM?
Or did you compile it yourself?
Is that apache from RPM?

Please post the output of "uname -a" and "ipcs -m".
"lsmod" and "nice top -b -n 1" might also help.

Yes, it's RH 7.0, compiled the 2.2.19 kernel myself, it has SYSVIPC
configured. Apache is also installed by hand (as well as mod_perl, but
that shouldn't matter). It is apache_1.3.19, compiled with gcc 2.96.

Here's the output of the commands you requested above, I hope they
help:

[root@localhost apache_1.3.19]# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.2.19 #4 SMP Thu Apr 26 11:40:35 PDT 2001

Mhh, that's strange.
On my machine running kernel 2.4.4 and apache 1.3.19
(but nothing else) the output looks like this:

------ Shared Memory Segments --------
key       shmid     owner     perms     bytes     nattch    status
0x00000000 65536     apache    600       46084     7         dest
0x00280267 32769     root      644       1048576   6

The one thing I miss in your output is a process running as
'nobody', or something similar. I guess the shown segments
are not left-overs from unsuccessful start attempts,
but from completely different programs.

I would try to boot into text-mode and run apache without X.
There are some GUI methods to do this, but the easiest to
explain is this:

edit /etc/inittab
change the first non-empty, non-comment line
from "id:5:initdefault:" to "id:3:initdefault:"
reboot
