403 Forbidden you don't have access to / on this server.....

Hello:

This is an error message that I'm getting with my apache 1.3.9 server
running multiple virtual hosts (for all named and ip virtual hosts on the
server).  I've checked my /etc/httpd/logs/error_log and the associated error
logs for each virtual host.  I've checked my srm.conf and verified that:

AccessFileName is commented out with a #;

In my /etc/httpd/conf/access.conf I've got:

<Directory />
Options None
AllowOverride None
allow from all
</Directory>

and ...

<Directory /usr/local/www/*/www>
order deny,allow
allow from all
</Directory>

the document root area for all virtual hosts is
/usr/local/www/www.domain.ext/www/

user/group permissions are setup as 775 owner nobody, group nobody.

Here's a snip from one of the error logs:

[Thu Feb 17 03:19:03 2000] [error] [client 206.157.139.8] Directory index
forbid
den by rule: /usr/local/www/www.luminist.com/www/

forb
idden by rule: /usr/local/www/www.luminist.com/www/

I'm hoping that someone can provide me a good pointer to the obvious thing
that I'm missing.

thanks in advance.

don.

You need "Options +Indexes" in order to get a directory listing
on a directory with no DirectoryIndex file (index.html usually).

1. '403 Forbidden' error on ALL server access attempts

I have a Linux box with Apache 1.3.20, and it compiled and started up
fine. But when I tried to access the server with my browser, it gave
me this error message:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /
on this server.
Apache/1.3.20 Server at 192.168.1.100 Port 8080

        It was the same deal when I used other browsers, went on other
computers on my local LAN, tried to access other files/directories,
etc. I looked at the FAQ and it said look at <FILES ~> in the config
file, but that wasn't the problem...none of the questions in the FAQ
helped.
        I'm running the server as root, and I tried accessing my pages as
root, as a regular user, and from my Win98 machine.
        I modified the default config file only slightly, basically only to
make it work with my IP address and port, and to change the
DocumentRoot to a directory off my home directory. Can anyone help me
with this?
