CERN httpd dir-tree protection

CERN httpd dir-tree protection

Hi!

I set up a CERN httpd server and need to protect a whole directory tree.
I want that the people who want to access the protect tree have to enter
their username and their password. I tried for several hours, but had
no access. The server always said that the tree is not protected. Seems
like I do not understand the manual at all. I do not understand what has
to be in the group file. I created a passwd file with the htadm program.
Also I do not understand the meaning of the GetMask parameter.
Could someone please explain me what to do to protect a give tree, like
/server/root/* so that the users are prompted for their username and
password.

Any help is appreciated, since it drives me nuts.

Thanks,

Marcus

One way of accomplish this is to create the Access-Control-File - .www_acl
and put the file in each of the directorys that you want to protect.
If you put the ACL-file in the "top-directory" it will due but if some
user knows the name of the remaining subdirectorys he can can get there
by changing the location directly without go by your forms or html-pages.
To avoid this you have to put the ACL-file in each directory.

The other way to solve this is to use the GetMask funktion. I have not used=

my selfe so I cannot help you there. Have you tried contacting CERN about t=
his?

Take a look at How to set up and maintain a World Wide Web Server by Lincoln
Stein, published by Addison-Wesley, where this is explained pretty well.

1. Access Protection using CERN httpd

Using CERN's httpd, is there a way to prevent access to a set of
documents from a specific IP address/domain?

e.g. - I want everyone to be able to see a set of documents
*except* those hosts in the *.somecompany.com domain.

Thanks.
