SSL Apache Server startup requires password on startup

Post by cbu.. » Thu, 30 Sep 1999 04:00:00

We are moving from Netscape to Apache Stronghold with SSL.
When we do start-server, it always asks for the SSL password.

 ./start-server
xx.yy.com:443: Mon Aug 30 02:09:02 1999 - Tue Sep 12 02:09:02 2000
xyz.yy.com:443: Tue Sep 28 19:00:00 1999 - Thu Sep 28 18:59:59 2000
Enter pass phrase: PASSWORD HERE

We need to automate that.  With Netscape, we used to do:
   echo PASS | startthenetscapeserver
in the start up scripts so in case the box dies the servers will come
back up.

That echo trick doesn't work.  What can I do to automate the entering
in of the pass phrase.  If the machine dies at 2am, I don't want to
start up a dozen servers by hand, that is lame.

Expect is your friend.

(So is registering certificates without embedded passwords)

Hi,,

Run decrypt_key and this will remove the password from the private key.

Then you can run a startup script etc.

SSL Apache Server startup requires password on startup

If you are using the OpenSSL (SSLeay) toolkit, there is a simple way to
convert the encrypted keys to non-encrypted keys.   This in no way affects
the actual SSL certificate, it just jeopardizes your security if someone
gets ahold of your cert and your key.  The procedure is documented in the
FAQ chapter of the OpenSSL documentation, at http://www.openssl.org/

Good Luck

1. Apache-SSl start-up pass key??

I've just installed apache-ssl on my system, and it places a file
"S85httpsd" in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d (among others), which is a link to
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpsd.  I'm running Redhat 5.1.

When starting the httpsd daemon, I get prompted for the "pass phrase".
That's great if I'm starting the daemon manually (which I was doing while
setting things up), but it the system restarts, it asks for that phrase
at the console.  Unfortunately, I'm not *at* the console right now -
I rarely am.

Is there a way to have the init script read the pass phrase from the
file?  The operative line of the script is (from #! /bin/sh):

    nice -n 0 httpsd

(actually called from a function call "daemon" - "daemon httpsd"
from the httpsd init script results in the above command being executed).

Many thanks.
