Apache 1.3.27 Installation (Start) with SSL

Post by Karl Heinz Marbais » Sun, 25 May 2003 00:24:01

Hi there,

I have compiled Apache with mod_ssl and tried to
start the Server using "apachectl startssl"

(Apache/1.3.27 mod_ssl/2.8.12)

I have stopped all other Web-Servers. I have started the checking
with three parallel web-server (Port 80 1.3.27)
Port 90 Apache 2.0.44) and tried to start the last with SSL support.

Now I tried to start the server, but I get the following error Message:
"[Fri May 23 17:16:04 2003] [crit] (98)Address already in use: make_sock:
could not bind to port 443"

Can someone give me hint we to look what's wrong?

Kind Regards...

Karl Heinz

Something, possibly another web server instance, is already bound to
that port (443). Check lsof or netstat to see what's bound to it. What
platform are you running?

I have shutdown all other instances and checked with ps fawx. After your
hint
i have checked with lsof if an other instance using socket 443, but
based on the information i got there is no one using of the socket...

The platform I'm using is a SuSE 8.0 System with
"Linux dev 2.4.18-4GB #2 Sat Jan 4 22:40:17 CET 2003 i686 unknown"

Many thanks for your hints.
Kind Regards.

1. setting up Apache 1.3.27 with the ssl on Freebsd 4.7(stable)

I am trying to setup Apache on FreeBSD 4.7(stable).  I installed the
apache+mod_ssl-1.3.27+2.8.11 package. I configured the httpd.conf
without trouble and it passed the syntax tests. I ran the command:

# apachectl configtest

and "Syntax OK" was returned. When i run

# apachectl start
or
# apachectl startssl

this was returned:

apachectl start: httpd could not be started
or
apachectl startssl: httpd could not be started
respectively.

I am very confused by this nebulous error. I don't know where to go
from here. I am not sure what i could test to determine the a
solution.

I have another question about how i could get it to start on boot up.
I did not see a way to start it in the rc.conf file. Is there another
way have it on startup.

Thank you for your help,
