Virtual Host Brain Teaser???

Post by pop12 » Wed, 20 Sep 2000 04:00:00

I am implementing  (trying)  Name Based Virtual Hosting Apache V 1.3.9
on a Mac OS X Server with little luck.  Here is my setup:
ServerName ns1.*clone.net - a registered host and domain name to use

as a configuration server ;no hosting from main server.
Here is my setup:
NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.253

There must be more to it than that!  What about a VirtualHost section?

The first problem I see is that
ns1.*clone.net does not resolve to 192.168.1.253.

1. Brain Teaser!? periodic partial services outage

I have a very strange problem. I am using a RH6.1 box as a router
for my home network, which is internet connected via ADSL modem.
topography is as such:

wall
|
DSL modem
|
RH6.1 box
|
hub-----------+
|             |
win98 box     winMe box

RH6.1 box is running ipchains, no setup changes recently.

PROBLEM: I am experiencing "outages" of usually about 1-3 hour duration
where I am unable to use the following OUTGOING service:
ftp
telnet
telnet 25 (get any pop mail)

By 'unable to use' I mean that I see the following
% telnet somehost.com
Trying 123.456.789.123...

and then nothing more... eventually it times out.

but the above services DO work incoming (i.e. I can telnet to the RH6.1
box from outside on the internet.

also, during these outages, I am able to get OUTGOING HTTP to work (i.e.
I can surf the web).

I can also ping and traceroute without trouble during these times.

After about 3 hours, everything clears up. Almost without fail, the
beginning and end of these outage periods occur when I'm not
doing anything at any of the computers in my house.

I am at a total loss as to how to debug this. Any ideas? Need more
info on my system? I'll post it... just let me know.
