Search engines that search more than HTML

Post by Mike Flahert » Sat, 24 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hello All,

I have been looking in vain for a search engine that will find a string
(inputted from a form) in a MS Word document.  They all seem to just accept
html and text.

Any suggestions,

Mike

In unix?  Best try "strings".

HtDig (www.htdig.org) works fine, several commercial searchengines does too.

You can use catdoc in addition to webglimpse:

http://webglimpse.net/docs/

I think with catdoc you could write scripts for feeding other search
engines as well.

I second the verity recommendation. There is an OEM version that comes with
Cold Fusion Server and it does a pretty good job. It Indexes MSWord files as
well as other file formats.

1. NEED SEARCH ENGINE / ROBOT: Search our site and all linked sites

I'm looking for a search program that will search and index everything on my
site AND on all sites linked to mine.  As such, this is different from most
queries of this type (many of which I read via Dejanews before posting this
article), that are looking for engines that only search the local site.

System is Linux 2.0.26, so any solution needs to run under Linux, though if
such were available for Windows 95 I could run it on the Win95 workstation and
make its output available.

Please respond either here or via e-mail and I'll summarize any emailed
responses.

Thanks ...
