Apache 1.2.1 and <!DOCTYPE ...

Post by ron stilling » Thu, 31 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I have just installed the Apache 1.2.1 server on a Solaris 2.5.1
machine, and all seems to be going well, except ..

Most of our documents are produced by web-editors, that put

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"">

as the first line of the document. If we try to display this
document, using the Apache server, we get the HTTP Header stuff and
the HTML code displayed in the browser.

HTTP/1.1 200 OKDate: Tue, 29 Jul 1997 22:15:08 GMT
Server: Apache/1.2.1
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/html

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
    .
    .
    .

If we delete this first line from the document, everything displays
just fine. Is this something others have experienced?

Any clues would be of great help.

     Thanks

Apache 1.2.1 and <!DOCTYPE ...

I made a serious mistake. This <!DOCTYPE works just fine, for all
our browsers, except for an AOL 1.2 browser. I did not check it out
first. I was responding to my co-workers panic, and I failed to get
all the data.

Maybe the "BrowserMatch" directive could help me, if I knew what
to turn off or on when it see's this type of browser.

   Sorry for the bandwidth

Nope, your AOL 1.2 browser must broken beyond all belief. Apache can't
be faulted for serving up the page exactly like it is on the disk.
Besides, that page looks perfectly valid.

Upgrade your AOL browser thing.
