Apache 1.2b4 ftp proxy error on Linux 2.0.27

Post by Harry Rari » Wed, 22 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I'm running Linux 2.0.27 with the Apache 1.2b4 proxy server.  HTTP proxy
works well, but ftp proxy is a bust.  Everytime my netscape browser
accesses an ftp site via the proxy it fails with an Apache generated
error page and the following error message appears in the server log:

[Sun Jan 17 15:29:20 1988] Server configured -- resuming normal
operations
[Sun Jan 17 23:11:17 1988] proxy: error setting PASV debug option
- setsockopt: Operation not permitted

Any ideas as to what is causing this error message and how I could fix
it?

Much tnx,

Harry

Known problem.  No official fix yet, try removing the bit in the code
that tries to set the debug option and prints the error you are
getting if it can't.

For some random and bizarre reason the apache proxy seems to try and
fiddle with the kernel debugging facilities on for the socket. Needless
to say Linux doesn't like that unless you are root and reports "Operation
not permitted".

Apache 1.2b4 ftp proxy error on Linux 2.0.27

It seems Linux (now?) requires root priviledge to set the SO_DEBUG
option, so I just did an "#ifndef LINUX" around the whole section:

#ifndef LINUX
    if (setsockopt(dsock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_DEBUG, (const char *)&one,
      sizeof (int)) == -1)
    {
        proxy_log_uerror("setsockopt", NULL,
            "proxy: error setting PASV debug option", r->server);
        pclosef(pool, dsock);
        pclosef(pool, sock);
        return SERVER_ERROR;
    }
#endif

Be warned, though:  Whenever I use the FTP proxy to download a file
the file is almost always corrupt. :(  It looks like there's still
some work to do on it.

Cheers

Hmmm. This is on Linux, I suppose? Can you tell me what the symptoms of
the file corruption are?

1. log messages Apache 1.2b4, proxy ftp / RH Linux 4.0?

I run Apache 1.2b4 and proxy ftp via the http port by setting the
following options in httpd.conf:

ProxyRequests On
ProxyRemote ftp http://gatekeeper.foo.com:80

All web browsers are then setup to use port 80 to proxy ftp.
When I do this I see output similar to the following in a log file:

Feb 6 10:14:26 gatekeeper kernel:
Feb 6 10:14:26 gatekeeper kernel: tcp_ack: seq 53d6861a ack e2e24f65
Feb 6 10:14:27 gatekeeper kernel: Ack past end of seq packet.
Feb 6 10:14:27 gatekeeper kernel:
Feb 6 10:14:27 gatekeeper kernel: tcp_ack: seq 53d6861a ack e2e24f65
Feb 6 10:14:30 gatekeeper kernel:
Feb 6 10:14:30 gatekeeper kernel: tcp_ack: seq 53d6861a ack e2e25acd
Feb 6 10:14:30 gatekeeper kernel:
Feb 6 10:14:30 gatekeeper kernel: tcp_ack: seq 53d6861a ack e2e2603c
Feb 6 10:14:34 gatekeeper kernel: rcv_ack_seq: 53D6861B==53D6861B,
                                   acked_seq: E2E2603C==E2E2603C

Sometimes there is quite a lot of it. ftp seems to be working but I
wonder about these tcp/ip packet problems. Anyone have some insight?

Regards,

Jeff
