Apache server or IIS server?

Post by Usman Mal » Sat, 17 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hello . . . I am currently using a web-hosting company to host my
website.  I am currently running on their Apache servers, however
since I essentially rely on Frontpage 98 to administer and develop my
site, I was wondering if I should switch over to their NT based server
running IIS.  Any comments would be gratefully received!

Thanks.

Lots of people will give you differing opinions. I think it is fair to
say that most of the posters on comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix are
pro-Apache though.

I can only speak for myself - I ran a NT 4 server box with IIS 3 for
about 15 months and I found it a very frustrating experience. NT would
crash every few days without leaving any logs of why it failed,
the MS Index server (site search engine) did the same. Also NT/IIS is
not secure out of the box - it takes a great deal  of work to make it
secure, in fact I would say it is impossible.

I think you will find that most ISPs/web hosting companies of similar sorts
to yours would recommend Apache - NT/IIS is not stable or secure enough.

Hope the above info is of help.

Apache server or IIS server?

FYI:
- Apache is also available for NT.
- Apache (atleast on BSDI, maybe all Apache flavours) has Frontpage
extensions available.

If I were you, I would look for a web host running a UNIX server with
frontpage extensions (I use prohost.com), as opposed to going for NT. I have
run a NT server before and found that its prettier but stupider than UNIX.

1. Dual Web Servers - IIS & Apache

I have Apache running under Linux as my main web server, I'm hosting my
website on it.  Is it possible to connect it via my LAN to my Windows 2000
computer, so I can have access to ASP and Cold Fusion also?  So some
sections of my web page would be on the Linux computer with Apache and other
sections on the Windows computer with IIS?

Any suggestions appreciated.
