Upgrade Apache package on Solaris 8

Post by Darr » Tue, 14 Aug 2001 03:55:38

I have Solaris 8 4/01 (x86) running the Apache package (1.3.12) based
on the install CD.
I would like to upgrade to the most recent version 1.3.20 but I am
curious about the way to do this.

I am still new to Solaris and the way it works. I have adopted the
play now learn later method.

Should I download the 1.3.20 solaris binaries or source from the
apache site or are there some patches that I can apply? I looked but
couldnt find any patches on apache's site.

I'm not sure why Sun ships Apache. Presumably because they intend to
bundle some applications with Solaris that rely on it.

If you intend to run Apache for your own use, then you should build
it from source yourself and install it somewhere other than /usr/apache
(my preference is /opt/apache)

If you're not using Sun's apache, then you should confirm that its not
running. I just pkgrm it.

|I'm not sure why Sun ships Apache.

Because users asked for it?  Because it gave a platform for deploying
the Network Cache Accelerator code?

It obviously won't be the best web server for everyone - but it saves
having to download from www.sunfreeware.com or trying to figure out how
to compile it yourself for setting up small web sites.  (At work I use
the bundled version for running our groups web server - less than 1000
hits a week, nothing special, but it was setup in 5 minutes.   For my
wife's web server that gets closer to 1000 hits/minute at peak load, I
compiled from source and specified the exact set of modules we needed.)

download both, see if you find it hard to build if you do, install the
binary.

I always perfer to build everything from source over installing
precompiled binaries although sometime I don't really feel I have a
choice. You learn alot more when you build.

Thanks. I'll try that.

normaly these day, I prefer binaries from trusted sources.
I hate apache1.x because some modules(SSL!) require you have source
I hate apache2.x because the modules I want to use, dont work with it.

so I limp along with 1.x

The word of the day is mispergitude

1. Upgrade Apache package on Solaris 8 (yes again..)

I turned up a thread with the same name and question (Date: 2001-08-12)
but I am looking to fix what I have instead of ripping (pkgrm) and
replacing (build my own version in /usr/local/apache or /opt/apache).

Anyway:
I have Solaris 8 for x86 with MU4 and the Nov 14, 2001 'recommended and
security" patches. This comes with Apache 1.3.12. The latest version is
Apache 1.3.22. I have just started to play with Apache and want to keep
my setup as shipped (e.g. the directory layout, startup scripts etc),
just with the latest httpd.

What I want to do if it is feasible:
1. Get (probably by doing a ./configure, make on the 1.3.22 source) the
latest httpd.
2. Copy this new httpd over the old one in /usr/apache/bin.

If that isn't going to work, my next thought was to:
1. Back up /etc/apache/httpd.conf and /var/apache/htdocs/index.html (as
far as my changes have got so far)
2. Compile from source using a bunch of configure options to recreate
the Sol 8 setup using the 1.3.22 version. e.g. ./configure
--prefix=/usr/apache --sysconfdir=/etc/apache
--htdocsdir=/var/apache/htdocs --logfiledir=/var/apache/logs  (and no
doubt a bunch more that I can probably eventually find by spending some
time cross referencing "man apache" and "configure --help)
3. make, make install
4. put back my old httpd.conf and index.html

This would obviously be a bit more of a pain than option 1, but if it
will work as I want (same Apache setup as original on Sol 8 with the
updated httpd) I'll reluctantly give it a try.

The last thought was to leave well enough alone:
I noticed that Apache.org has no recommended patches for 1.3.12
(http://httpd.apache.org/dist/httpd/patches/apply_to_1.3.12/)
Is it safe to stay at 1.3.12 at this time? The lack of patches from
Apache seems to imply this. Performance isn't critical for this test
setup but security is.

Or am I missing something blindingly obvious? Like a Solaris 8 x86
package for Apache 1.3.greater-than-20-or-so with Sun's eclectic
directory choices that I can pkgadd and get my preferred setup described
above...

Thanks in advance.
