Apache problem - core dumps (httpd.core) all over the place

Post by Dean Lodzins » Fri, 28 Nov 1997 04:00:00

My ISP just switched from NCSA to Apache (to support FrontPage 98
extensions).  The servers are SGI/IRIX I believe.  Since the change to
Apache I am getting httpd.core dump files in many of my html
directories.  I just deleted 16 megs of them.

I assume this is some sort of memory dump from the httpd daemon
process.  So, my questions are:

1)  What are some likely causes that would create all these dump
files?

2)  What are some possible fixes (if we know some possible causes) to
stop this from happening.

I never had this problem using NCSA, so I am pretty confident it has
something to do with either Apache, the FrontPage 98 extensions, or
both.

Thanks,
  -Dean

Apache problem - core dumps (httpd.core) all over the place

Ask your ISP.  They are the only ones who can debug it.

If the web server is core dumping in your web directories, that
is not normal.  First off, they shouldn't normally be writable
by the web server.  Secondly, Apache doesn't normally change
directories to your documents directory so it wouldn't dump
core there.

This may be something related to the silly frontpage modules.  You
really need to go through this with your ISP.

1. dump core or not dump core

Howdy,

Some of my programs dump core, others don't. I tried
it on RedHat 6.1 and Mandrake 7.0 with kernels 2.2.14
and 2.2.15. I tried tcsh and bash with coredumpsize
set to 1GB. It seems to be application specific.

Is there any other criteria when suppressing apart from
the type of signal and the size limitation?
The application that doesn't dump core contains signal
handlers for some signals, but not for SEGV or ABRT.
